What is the purpose of a snowsuit?
In the cold months, it is nice to know that the baby is warm and comfortable in the stroller. You can be sure of that if the baby is wearing a nice warm snowsuit under the blanket.
As a rule of thumb, if you want to keep your child warm, they should wear extra clothing rather than an extra blanket or quilt. The closer to the child, the better it retains heat. This also applies in the stroller. A good snowsuit is better than an extra blanket.
Remember that if it gets really cold, the stroller should also be insulated from below. Possibly with a woolen blanket under the mattress. Also remember a hat, mittens, and socks for the baby when sleeping outside in the winter air.
Can a baby stay warm in a snowsuit?
A snowsuit for newborns, babies, and children is a must when it is cold outside. It functions as a jacket and thermal pants, keeping your child nice and warm. The snowsuit can be used advantageously when the baby sleeps outside in the stroller, and it can also be nice to have on if the baby or young child is awake and sitting in the stroller or pram and observing. In that case, pay attention to whether the child gets cold on the upper body, which is not covered by the blanket when the child is sitting up.
Snowsuits for the very young
When the baby is very small, for example, a newborn, you should consider whether it is a good idea to let the baby sleep outside if it is very cold. If it is just an ordinary mild Danish winter, the newborn baby can easily sleep outside.
Remember that the little baby has difficulty regulating its body temperature. If you find that wool snowsuits are too thick and bulky for the little baby, you can buy one made of cotton. It may be slightly lighter for the small child.
It may be a good idea to have a hood that covers the neck so the baby does not get cold there. If the baby is wearing a hat, there may be a gap between the hat and the snowsuit if the suit does not have a hood.
Snowsuits in wool and cotton
There are many different snowsuits available. At Naturebaby.dk, we have a selection of snowsuits for babies and children made of wool, wool fleece, and cotton, so you can find one in the material you prefer. We offer snowsuits from brands such as Engel, Disana, Konges Sløjd, and Müsli.
It is not a joke when wool is praised to the skies. It is truly a luxurious material with many good qualities. For example, it is great at retaining heat, even when wet from sweat or rain. Wool is self-cleaning, so it actually does not need to be washed as often, unless it becomes dirty. It can simply be aired out.
Most of the wool clothing available today, including what you can find at Naturebaby.dk, is made of soft and fine wool that does not itch. It can even be washed almost like regular clothing. Usually, it should be washed at 30 degrees on a wool program with wool detergent. Cotton is good if it is very hot outside. It is lighter than wool and does not have the same insulating properties. However, it is also soft and comfortable against the skin.
Which snowsuit should you choose?
When choosing a snowsuit for your newborn baby or young child, start by considering your needs. Does the baby sleep outside all year round or only when it is warm outside? Will you use the snowsuit for car rides or only in the stroller or pram? How else do you keep the baby warm?
If the baby sleeps outside all year round, it makes the most sense to buy multiple snowsuits, so you have one for summer and one for winter. But wait to buy them until you need them. Babies grow so quickly that it is impossible to predict what size you will need when the time comes.
If you often drive in a car, it may be a good idea to buy a snowsuit with feet and a hood. That way, the baby always has something on their feet and cannot kick off their booties while you are driving. You can find snowsuits where you can choose whether the baby's feet are inside or outside the suit. That way, the suit can be used for a longer time without becoming too short in the legs.
