What is a sleeping bag?
A sleeping bag is basically a kind of sleeping bag for babies and very young children that can fit in a pram, stroller, or car seat. There are different types of sleeping bags and sleeping bags for children.
The classic sleeping bag is a big thing that most resembles a heavy duvet that you fold around the child. Some sleeping bags have handles and a plate at the bottom so you can carry the baby in them. Others are completely soft and are best used on a firm surface or in a pram or car seat.
The classic sleeping bag is often made of heavy cotton on the outside and wool on the inside. Alternatively, it can be filled with wool in a cotton cover. You place the baby in the middle of the sleeping bag, and then fold the sides around the baby, which is enveloped safely and warmly. The sides of the sleeping bag are fastened either with strings or a zipper, and can usually be adjusted to fit children from newborn up to three years old.
What is a baby sleeping bag?
A sleeping bag is usually a slightly smaller thing, as it is a bag, often made of wool, that the baby goes into with its legs. You can get sleeping bags with and without sleeves, but they all sit on the baby like a sweater or vest with a zipper or buttons in front.
The idea with the sleeping bags is that the baby cannot kick off the duvet while sleeping when its legs are inside the sleeping bag. You can get sleeping bags in the finest merino wool and in many different designs. The sleeping bag can be used with or without a duvet depending on how cold it is.
How to find the best sleeping bag
A sleeping bag for children can be a bit of an expense. Therefore, it is important to have done your research well before investing in one, so you get the product you will be happiest with. Here are some things to be aware of and consider before buying a sleeping bag for your child.
What will it be used for?
As always when buying gear, you should consider what your needs are. What do you need it for? Do you need a sleeping bag that your baby can lie in in the pram or stroller in the coldest winter, or is it more for transition and driving in a heated car and car seat? Maybe it's for the bed at night, where the baby throws off the duvet?
Because the sleeping bag is generally smaller and thinner, and possibly without sleeves, it is best suited for sleeping with a duvet and a good sweater or jacket in the pram. The sleeping bag may initially seem like a good solution in the car seat because it doesn't take up much space, but remember to check if there are holes for the seat belt. The same goes if you need to use it in the pram.
Sleeping bags often have holes for the seat belt, so they can be used in both the pram or stroller and the car seat. However, the large sleeping bags can be a bit too bulky in a car seat. If you buy a sleeping bag with a plate, it can replace a carrycot for the pram, as you can lift it in and out of the pram using the handles.
Different products for different seasons
If you have a winter baby, it may be a good idea to have a nice warm sleeping bag that can be closed tightly around the baby, possibly with a small duvet if it is very cold. Remember a hat and sweater for the arms that stick out.
A summer baby may be able to do with a sleeping bag that it can lie in without a big duvet, depending on how warm it is. If you have challenges with the baby also throwing off the duvet at night, a sleeping bag can be a good solution for that.
How big should the sleeping bag be?
As a starting point, sleeping bags are for babies and small children. Most sleeping bags with handles can withstand nine kilograms. The sleeping bags are usually closed at the bottom, so there is a natural end to their use. Some sleeping bags can be expanded so they can be used for a little longer than the sleeping bags can.
So when you have to choose which sleeping bag you should get, you should look at how long you expect to need it.
Both sleeping bags and sleeping bags can be used in both the pram and stroller, as long as there are holes for the seat belt. Most children move on to sleeping in the stroller when they can no longer fit in the pram. Therefore, a sleeping bag is really a hit here because it can be laid down in the stroller and provide protection for the feet and legs that the stroller otherwise cannot.
