When should your child switch from a baby bed to a children's bed/junior bed?

Baby beds are perfect for babies and young children who cannot yet walk. But when the child starts crawling and standing up, there is a risk that your child will try to crawl out of their baby bed/crib. There is a big difference in when children start crawling and walking, but typically they can do it themselves when they are around 1 year old.

The children's bed is also called a junior bed, and this size bed is perfect for children who have learned to walk and can therefore get out of their bed by themselves. You can often let your child sleep in the junior bed until he or she reaches a certain height or until the child expresses a desire to have an adult bed. Generally, children will probably switch from a junior bed to an adult bed when they are around 6 years old.

If you wait a couple of years to replace the crib, you can skip the junior bed and go straight to a small adult bed. In some cases, however, the child may not think it's cool to still sleep in a crib when they have friends visiting. So for the child's sake, it may be desirable to have a bed in a size that matches the child's preferences.

Which beds are good for children?

As a parent, it is your responsibility to choose the right bed and mattress for your child, but often the choice is obvious. There are general trends in parenting, just as there are more or less fixed times for when a child should have a baby bed/crib, junior bed, and small adult bed. To a large extent, it is up to you as a parent to make the choice, but you can also listen to your child.

Some children may prefer to stay in the crib and be close to you, while others may want to move into their own room and sleep in their own 'adult' bed. When it comes to comfort and design, it is a different question that you should ask yourself. Here, you should simply consider comfort and materials as well as design. The most important thing for your child is probably the practical aspect, while the design aspect will become more important for your child's room decor as they grow older.

It is practical at night so you can have the child close to you while you sleep, and move the bed around at other times of the day.

Many cribs used to be square in the past, but current trends mostly indicate that baby beds and junior beds should be round. The fact that the bed frame has rounded corners means that it can be harder to find a mattress and other accessories that fit perfectly with the bed. But it is worth it, as the appearance of the bed gives a softer impression and is a safer place for your child. The softer shapes resemble the time before birth, while there are fewer sharp corners on the outside that you or your child can bump into.
